Guru Nanak formalised three basic guidelines for Sikhs:

The three duties

The three duties that a Sikh must carry out can be summed up in three words; Pray, Work, Give.

  • Naam Japo:

Keeping God in mind always.

  • Kirat Karo:

Earning an honest living. Since God is truth, a Sikh seeks to live honestly. This doesn't just mean avoiding crime; Sikhs avoid gambling, begging, or working in the alcohol or tobacco industries.

  • Vand Chako:

(Literally, sharing one's earnings with others) Giving to charity and caring for others.

With these 3 values, the Guru knew that the person would achieve spiritual elevation and material happiness in this world. "Those who have meditated on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and departed after having worked by the sweat of their brows -O Nanak, their faces are radiant in the Court of the Lord, and many are saved along with them!" (SGGS p 8)

Guru Nanak founded Sikhism. He felt the Divine Call at the age of 38 and then decided to dedicate his whole life to the service of God and humanity. Visiting different places in Punjab, he spread the doctrine of love and equality. Also a poet and musician, he composed several hymns, which were subsequently included in the Guru Granth Sahib. A social reformer as well, he tirelessly toiled to uplift the downtrodden and fought against the oppression of women.
